Yeah I don't know the economic language for it but I think ppl think if they leave academia they lose the potential value of their degree.
Which is not just well-paid job but opportunity to research whatever it is they're passionate about.

But adjuncting doesn't pay you to do research, or even leave you much time in which to do it...

But the feeling is, if I leave academia, I'll never return. Even if my current position isn't tenure track, I'm still "in academia."
