Even if you accept claim that states are the unit of political equality—and deserve = weight regardless of size—you're left with a problem.
Whatever the framers envisioned, they certainly didn't anticipate a system where a distinct minority (a "faction) had unified control.
That the Constitution precludes "tyranny of the majority" doesn't actually mean that it endorses minority rule.
And one reason our current arrangement isn't seen as illegitimate rule by minority is that said minority is white, and thus...
...in the political imagination of America, intrinsically representative and reflective of the country at large.
From the beginning American democratic thinking took whiteness as a prerequisite to citizenship and that idea persists to the present.
Such that we conceptualize white voters, & rural/blue-collar ones in particular, as a kind of super-citizen whose choices are extra-salient.
Given their outsized influence due to electoral college, gerrymandering and the Senate, alas perhaps they are super citizens
but the fact that they are structurally and politically super-citizens does not mean that they are morally or ontologically super-citizens.
and we can leverage that gap to move towards a situation in which they are no longer structural/political super-citizens
