Yeah, I agree. Vaguely defined terms can sometimes be more useful than precisely defined ones, but people recoil at this idea.
Also I have a little bit of inherited literary theory postmodernism in me and I think words are leaky containers for ideas and treating them

Of course, I think literary postmodernism is generally EVEN WORSE about this...sometimes it seems like it's all just definitional noodling.
