Third, make prison about education, rather than torture and retribution.pic.twitter.com/xKwWH27yNv
And fourth, implement community policing. Have cops get out of their cars and walk around!pic.twitter.com/evKbvu1xQR
Also, @csilverandgold suggested a great idea, which is to focus on hiring cops from the communities they police, rather than from outside!
That's not a new idea. In a lot of high crime neighborhoods it's difficult to find high school graduates without criminal records.
In general, narrowing the applicant pool with a neighborhood preference leads to lower quality cops and lower quality policing.
well I mean... I'm radical so to me the solution is not to abandon hiring local cops but to change the standards. not lower, but change.
On the more palatable end of the spectrum, full and retroactive legalization of weed would make a lot of potentially-great cops eligible.
On the more radical end, you could have prison education programs actually geared towards getting ex-offenders into law enforcement.
which of course would be super hard but in boston they're having some success focusing on getting "core influencers" into college...
imagine what would happen if "core influencers" were representing the justice system they previously fought against?
(but I know I know that's radical, obviously huge risk of corruption, etc., etc.)
