The debate re: the right rhetoric to defend undocumented people's rights is a great example of how the debate boils down to "human or not."
The root is always "If I am a human, then you treat me like x. I will not treat you like x. Therefore, you do not see me as a human."

and that's an irreducible conflict. There is no political compromise there. So what we need is cultural and political rules of engagement.

we can't stop this conflict from unfolding. But we can maybe structure the conflict so as to avoid an outcomes that is disastrous for all.
