Liberalism, because it posits common needs, also posits a common teleology for human beings:

majoritarian liberal democracy with strong legal protections for minorities, balancing rights-as-freedoms and rights-as-needs...

freedom-from and freedom-to. And that (implicit) liberal idea that "common humanity implies common teleology" is how we got the Iraq War...

because Iraqis are fundamentally the same as Americans, have the same human rights and human needs, obviously they have the same teleology

And if they can't achieve their teleology on their own, we, Big Brother America, will achieve it for them. Yay!

Obviously that idea failed catastrophically and murderously.
