5/This is going to bring 1000 screaming lefty dudes down on my head, but I think the majority of American voters aren't materially deprived.

6/Yes we have poor people in this country, and they suffer a lot. But most Americans have income, housing, plenty of food, etc. etc.

8/Once people aren't materially deprived or in danger of such, they start worrying about other stuff - being accepted, being respected.

9/THIS is what "identity politics" are about. People who don't feel they're accepted as real Americans want to be accepted.

10/And people who don't feel they're respected want to be respected. These are basic human needs, and shouldn't be belittled.

11/Now, it's certainly true that being accepted and respected confers some material benefits. I'm not denying that.

12/If you're respected and accepted, it IS a bit easier to get a job, a promotion, a loan, a house...all that stuff. No denying it.
