"The South won the Civil War" is a pretty nuts take. They'd MUCH rather have kept slavery than had Jim Crow + 100 years of relative poverty.

I suppose the argument is winners get to write the history, and the South got to write the history as losers.
But the more accurate thing to say is just "Reconstruction failed" which is really what people mean when they say that.

Reconstruction didn't fail, it wasn't seriously attempted because Johnson starved it and the Corrupt Bargain finished the job

Nah, much different. In the Civil War there were things worth fighting for, good outcomes that were possible. In Iraq, not so much.
