Anyway I'll just talk from personal experience: every school/university I've attended and 80% of jobs I've worked have been mostly white...

And we all know that like... getting along in a school or job isn't JUST about checking all the boxes and doing the bare-bones requirements

there's also an element of success that has to do with making people like you, following social norms, knowing how to break social rules...

if you're going to break them, etc. Basically, knowing the culture, or making sure there's a "culture fit" between you & your environment.

Well, when those cultures are mostly-white, and all the authority figures (boss, professor, manager, advisor, dean, etc.) are all white...

You learn pretty quickly how to fit into white culture. You learn a lot about white culture, which means learning about white people...

paying attention to white people, even studying white people. And that's especially true for someone like Mrs. Joy-Ann Reid.
