What does it mean to "get over" things? Forget about them? Or realize that those things don't have to define who we are as a nation?

the path to "these things don't have to define us" runs through "these things have defined us for many of our citizens."

Yeah. It has always been a real struggle between multiple groups of ppl who each thought their ideal was the American one.

Confederates thought they were fighting for the true American ideal. Beating their armies didn't really prove them wrong...

But I take heart in the fact that America has improved over time, while countries like Russia and China have a much spottier record.

The Trumpers think whiteness defines the real America. We can't really prove them wrong by beating them in elections...

...But if we make the case that they're wrong, if we say that diversity, not whiteness, defines America, we *can* beat them in elections.

The trouble with the messaging is making it ring true for constituencies on the left that have also came to see America defined by whiteness
