To clarify what I mean, we could just say "hate" instead of "affective distaste" but I want to emphasize the conscious + emotional aspect.

For example, we say that the classic "dogs and firehoses" images of racism during the Movement were motivated by conscious, emotional hate.
And I think thanks to how we mainstreamed the ideas of the civil rights movement in our culture...

we tend to define racism/sexism according to that rubric: an active, conscious, negative emotional response to an identity group.

and the point I'm trying to make is, that active emotional response is less important than ideas/assumptions/institutions/structures, etc.
