unhealthy ideas about black folks, whether it's making us too saintly or too selfish or too violent or too passive or whatever.

Do you understand how hard it is to create a fully human character? Writing is really hard work, and we all write into our imaginations.

We write into our fantasies, we write up to the limit of what we understand about reality, and we write with our whole selves.

It's hard for anyone---white, black, or otherwise---to have a "whole self" that is free of racist ideas, bc racist ideas are everywhere.
