@riotheatherrr this looks vaguely fundamentalist Christian, not necessarily public school—it just has that whiff (trust me)
The school didn't creation, it was created by a company called laying the foundation.
which apparently merged with https://www.nms.org/Programs/LayingtheFoundationProgram/TeacherTraining/TrainingforEnglish.aspx … …so my bad, it IS public-school *shudders*
This appears to be the novel excerpted: http://mcleckley.wikispaces.com/Witness I have no idea if the novel's any good. 1/
From that summary, no idea how valid, I can see how such a novel would be legitimate content for AP HS English 2/
Excerpting those particular sentences as grammar exercises is, at best, terrible judgment for reasons we see here 3/
Unclear to me whether any racist intent, but also unclear why you'd choose those sentences. 4/
My big concern is creating a world where educators think, "Fuck it. Not worth assigning a novel on racism." 5/
If we teach our kids, implicitly or explicitly, that it's not OK to discuss these issues, our society is poorer. 6/6
but the point isn't whether or not it's a legit novel to teach or racist intent or whatever.
the point is the black kids in class who is just trying to do work and all of the sudden...
has to think about KKK. It's about how KKK means real, present danger and fear and terror to some.
