but what happens when they break through to the actual stories of, say, Iraqis who helped US military and are hurt by this?
I get that they don't care about me crying about it, but I know they are not impervious to actual direct suffering of others.

Suffering of a form they can recognize and empathize with. Some will have empathy blocked by skin hue or a false pragmatism.
