I'd be satisfied with e.g. markup if I could typeset equations with it. But hopefully something as atrocious as MSWord won't ever be required. We can do with uploading PDFs.
Yep - the balance we have to strike is that the vast majority of people (in bio) start with Word. Really interest to see if writing habits change (obviously watching that space closely). And equations are always a problem (one reason manual QC necessary).

Pandoc allows to mix LaTeX math into Markdown documents and can convert a very decent subset TeX math into native representations in the target format (including docx formulas and HTML – conversion into images works, too). http://pandoc.org/MANUAL.html#math …
