(This+10 cups of coffee)x200 is what it looks like when I try to write a book. I am 99% certain I haven’t learned how to do research. Anyone else write their first draft in the margins of the people they’re reading? pic.twitter.com/NHWZ0eQMkz

I've torn up /Hamlet/. I've broken up /Clarissa/. I've given an entire lecture on dog-eared pages. Your bookshelf holds no fear for me.

For all of my book...additions, breaking up books still freaks me out; I have to rebind things when they fall apart. Tore a blank page out of the back of White Teeth once to start a campfire and I still feel guilty (and bought another copy)!

I think I know what it's about: the spine of one of my books broke when I was a kid and the pages fell out and it was just the saddest thing. Books as *just* objects never quite stuck as an idea after that :)
