But it’s been bugging me to remember that the author described themselves (both in person & over email) as a “journalist” who was “covering” the convention for The Chronicle.

I had no idea that they were writing a first-person essay. I did not know that they were “reporting” on the MLA in order to work through their own understandably-devastating experience on the job market. I was not aware that they had been drinking all day.

I don’t know if knowing all that would have changed my willingness to be interviewed but, usually, I avoid or deflect drunk dudes at hotel bars who are looking for “victims” they can talk to about how a profession that has failed them, personally, is in an apocalyptic free-fall.

Also, can I just say that that Chron piece & the wreck-your-whole-show-on-the-way-out GoT episode are totally mixed up in my head today? Crazy women may save things with weird ideas! But wait. Crazy women also do bewildering things because they are so upsettingly crazy!
