One thing I've wanted for a long time: an independent organization I could join, that I could file a report with if my boss asked me to do something unethical. Then they'd have my back (financially & legally) if I quit or was fired. This is another thing unions could do for us.https://twitter.com/aurynn/status/1174793048347136000 …

I didn't expect this, but suddenly I'm faced with a vendor of a major configuration management ecosystem making unethical choices. I want to stand by my ethics, but that might mean quitting not only my client, but also my employer. Thoughts?

Ugh, that must be so frustrating! I don't think our industry is prepared to grapple with these things in a systematic way yet. Some companies have "ethical vendor" policies, but most don't. Plus it's not clear if/how those would apply to the use of 3rd party open source software

I wonder if you could start a conversation at your company about having an ethical vendor policy, as a start? I'm sorry you are having to deal with this - you're sorta on the front lines here!

I will try. I appreciate your sympathy; for sure, my prior experience has been that if I want change, I must force it, I must create the change i want to see by shear force of will and personality. I am... unaccustomed to affecting change by pleading for it. By arguing for it.

"ethical vendor policy" I'm sure her company doesn't have one. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/aug/20/salesforce-us-customs-border-protection-contract-protests … I would take any ethical advice from a @salesforce employee with a grain of salt.
