Renoir took license with the dark nature of Gorky’s source material, softening its bleak outlook. Kurosawa remained faithful to the original, with its focus on the conflict between illusion and reality—a theme he would return to over and over again.pic.twitter.com/YY7Se9neDX
Working with their most celebrated actors (Gabin with Renoir; Mifune with Kurosawa), each filmmaker offers a unique look at cinematic adaptation—where social conditions and filmmaking styles converge to create unique masterpieces.pic.twitter.com/iKEoFb3ZOY
I found this to really be one of Kurosawa's unsung gems, with a handful of really marvelous performances. The Renoir is significantly less successful for me but it's endlessly fascinating to compare the two works. Terrific double feature.
I prefer Kurosawa’s version... raw and grim
