Santos withdraws applications for NT gas pipeline over legal challenge risks. When First Law and western law collide, anything is possible. What an incredible achievement by the powerful First Nations communities of the Tiwi Islands.

My latest for the , reflecting on that "scandal": "Marin's video resonated with me precisely because it spurns the separation of femininity and youth with high-powered careers and the public sphere, demonstrating that you can do both."

Barbara Ehrenreich, such a loss. Nickel and Dimed was terrific, but so was her work criticising positive thinking & wellness. And she created the Economic Hardship Reporting Project to help economically disadvantaged people tell their own stories.

Great article. I only enjoy my research because it is ‘grounded in [my] deeply held commitments and direct observations about the world’ - and I feel uncomfortable with scholarship that isn’t.

I've written a blog post about how a prestigious methods journal published an article about masturbating to child sexual abuse material, and what this means for academia as a whole organisedabuse.com/blog/2022/9/2/

I still don’t think people understand what it means for 33 million people to be displaced. That’s 6 times more people than those internally displaced in Ukraine from war, that’s roughly 90% of the population of Canada. That’s how many people are internally homeless right now

When I worked at a corporate law firm, one of our (non billable) timesheet codes was ‘contributing to the success of others’. I freakin loved that code. Anyway, I need to do a bit less of that today and a bit more ‘writing your freakin book’.

This would a totally avoidable and inexcusable #childrights catastrophe. Urgent, effective action must be taken. This isn't a case of charity or morality. It is about giving effect to legal requirements.

Some of the best advice I have to offer, which I wish I'd learned sooner, is that if someone in your life is struggling, offering specific help is more useful than a broad statement like "let me know if I can help." Offer specifics. Give them a menu of your available care.

How on earth can I hope to capture the scale of the water crisis in my book? Just this year, there have been catastrophic events basically everywhere. It’s genuinely frightening.

The floods in Pakistan are a humanitarian crisis displacing 30 million people from their homes. 2 months ago the country was dealing with a crippling heatwave. Climate change is upon us. In all conscience, we can’t open new coal or gas facilities.

How much more evidence do we need that biodiversity offsets don’t work?
