Chris Goater has worked for IATA as a comms director since 2010. Before that he worked for the Airport Operators Association. I remember this because Chris and I had a number of head to heads on TV & radio over airport expansion and climate change 3/npic.twitter.com/yaGGRbbB0F
When Chris first started at IATA in 2010, the industry association was trumpeting its new target of sourcing 10% alternative jet fuel by 2017. 4/n https://www.iata.org/en/pressroom/speeches/2009-06-08-01/ …pic.twitter.com/pwvZplF2WG
By 2018, the industry had managed to source a grand total of 0.002% of its fuel from alternative sources - enough to power about 10 minutes of global air travel. 5/nhttps://twitter.com/rutherdan/status/1216176946981158915?s=21 …
The excellent @rutherdan maps out the evolution of IATA’s sustainable jet fuel targets over time here 6/nhttps://twitter.com/rutherdan/status/1218977776490840064?s=21 …
Back to Chris Goater, who has, remember, worked for IATA as a communications director *throughout this period*. When he says, about alternative jet fuel use of 0.002% today, that “this has happened much faster than anyone expected”, what exactly does he mean? 7/n
Is he acknowledging that IATA did not believe it’s own hype in 2009, and lied in its 2010 communications, which he directed? Or alternatively, is he simply lying today when he claims this is happening faster than anyone expected? One of these options has to be true

This kind of consistent, endemic industry bullshit is why @StefanGossling et al have warned of “aviation technology myths” that special interests use to ward off effective policy and regulatory interventions on climate and environment 9/nhttp://theconversation.com/aviation-emissions-are-rising-and-industry-solutions-are-just-technological-myths-56032 …
It is in this light that the current IATA climate “target” of a 50% emissions reduction from the sector by 2050 has to be seen: not credible. Present trends suggest global aviation emissions could treble over the next 30y 10/npic.twitter.com/fg0HvlLiuQ
IATA’s current targets for alternative jet fuel use in 2050 wld require a new bio-jet fuel refinery to be built every week & a half for the next 30 years. Today there are 2 such facilities! These ppl are inveterate liars & we need to stop believing their dangerous fantasies ends/
