This is not to condemn them, because this is what people everywhere do. But you can understand why someone would not like the idea of ethnic Germans refusing to just be "American" after 150 years in this country.

Increased taxes and involuntary occupation piss off everybody, not just people who have read Enlightenment philosophers. Race awareness was real, but doesn't explain why Americans fought Englishmen.
