The Confederates were paranoid to be concerned about the "Union Loyal League"? Sorry, but Germans were not fans of slavery or secession.

Germans in Texas acted like modern immigrants groups motivated by hostility to an a ethnic majority. They allied with Mexicans to oppose secession and voted Republican for 100 years after the War.

This is not to condemn them, because this is what people everywhere do. But you can understand why someone would not like the idea of ethnic Germans refusing to just be "American" after 150 years in this country.
