Everyone likes to recites Santayana's quote but I think the world would actually better off overall if fewer people knew history. The foreign policy of the US post 1945 would have been a lot more sane if no one had learned the bloody word "appeasement".
Similarly, Europe would have a better chance of peace in 1914 if the Kaiser Wilhelm never read Mahan. As far I as can I tell there are no "lessons" to be learned from history because no two problems are alike: Vietnam wasn't Korea.
Problem was that people took the wrong lessons and didn’t learn enough of it. Thus they built an incomplete picture.
