The shooting at Columbine provoked a kind of moral panic, a pearl clutching reaction against video games and goth weirdos that now seems ridiculous. The moral panic was though, I think, justified. Columbine represented something profound: The Dawn of the Millenials.

Video games were not the cause of these shootings, but in the complaints by old timers they functioned as a stand in for all of the things about millenial teenagers that adults found strange: their distance from other people and community standards, their inhuman lack of empathy.

The two worst school shooters offer a strong clue as to what's really going on: Adam Lanza was one of the most autistic human beings ever born and everything about Seung Hoi-Cho suggests he had the same problem.
