It would be nice if people took the remaining few years before genetic engineering becomes widespread to figure out how to avoid an inevitable arms race where, to maintain relevance, states will have little choice but to coerce the practice onto its people.

The easiest solution would be a global ban, but is the UN going to be able convince paranoid North Korea to throw away such an advantage? I doubt it. And if this kind of thing is allowed anywhere there are going to be huge changes in the balance of power.

Under a voluntary system some people who choose to do nothing, others just to fix minor genetic misprints. But if one country, or even a religious minority, chooses to go all in and engineer every kid to be smarter than Von Neumann? I don't want history to be that interesting.

It’s unlikely human genetic engineering would surpass the abilities of a computer or a drone. I guess it would be more cost effective tho

How to avoid a eugenics arms race? Bro, the success of western civilization is entirely dependent on there being a eugenics arms race!

It's inevitable. I don't want my offspring to be the first generation subject to it for fear of complications, but if they're not part of the first successful generation, my line is doomed. They predict 4 digit IQs. That's like if we were all mice watched by midwits

why do that when you can just make it mandatory for people to get certain stuff to be allowed to interact with society

Wouldn't genetic engineering/'test tube babies' be limited to those with means though? Surely this would just coincide with elites' desire for depopulation w/ the perceived dysgenic no longer reproducing as opposed to needing to be forced.

I would imagine also that the coerciability and malleability of underclasses is ensured by their *not* being genetically engineered to engender eugenic results.
