Peasants with a poor grasp of mathematics will often round their age to a number ending with 5 or 0, 40 as opposed to 39 or 41. "The Whipple Index" is a crude test of numeracy that divides the number of ages ending with 0 or 5 with the total; higher scores mean more rounding.pic.twitter.com/3kCB6JEMeN

As a genealogist, I can attest to this. The 18th and 19th century records I look at are chock full of ages rounded to x0 and x5 years. There's also a definite skew towards older people embellishing their age. Once I find birth records I can verify when this happens.
