As a genealogist, I can attest to this. The 18th and 19th century records I look at are chock full of ages rounded to x0 and x5 years. There's also a definite skew towards older people embellishing their age. Once I find birth records I can verify when this happens.
Which reminds me of this paper... Blue Zones with lots of claimed supercentenarians are basically regions of dubious vital records and age fraud.https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/704080v1 …
