From 1300-1800 most European countries made no agricultural progress whatsoever, even as their scientists were leaving the rest of the world in the dust. The exceptions to the rule were England and the Netherlands, who by 1750 were outproducing German farmers by a factor of 3pic.twitter.com/h4T0rtxL5S

Something else is going on. Hard to think that Belgium was sliding backwards in agri technology for 500 years. Especially since their neighbor Netherlands is doing well. Is output measured in a currency or good that favours GB?

Could it be that UK after 1500 started to do what Europe had already done? Maybe cutting down their forests? Just guessing here.

But that is strangely enough not what we are seeing. Population from wiki. Year 1000, 1500 and 1820. Ger 3.5 , 12 and 25 Fra 6.5 , 15 and 31 UK 2 , 3.9 and 21 What is amazing here is not UK growth rate in popultation but its low population in the 1500s

          - use heavily degrated land and grow something on it that is still nutricious. it still yields for less then wheat or peas.
