Men often look at mountains and think of God: the connection being perfect perspective of the outside world. It changes the way you think: you feel curious about faraway places and times long ago.

Watching movies on the big screen does something similar: it lends itself to great historical epics vast in time and space: Lawrence of Arabia being probably the best example.

For a long time it was debated whether the hippocampus functioned as a 3-D navigator or a source of episodic memory. It actually does both: to think of the past or the future we think in three dimensions, we navigate. Vast spaces jar you into a broader point of view.
