American veterans of WWII in Europe did not seem to regard the war as a righteous crusade in the same way. their descendants did. After D-Day desertion reached catastrophic levels: in late 1944 there may have been in 20,000 US deserters in Paris alone.pic.twitter.com/qRHCjDTVz0

The United States shot exactly one deserter, Eddie Slovik, a draftee and occasional criminal who had deserted twice, expecting to be amnestied after the war. Because this is America, we later made a TV movie making him out to Jean Valjean or somethingpic.twitter.com/9kPT3a6Ylu

There really wasn't a comparable Paris for soldiers to flee to, but I find it unlikely that front line veterans of the Pacific would have deserted in the same numbers. They had a reason to fight, a reason even beyond Pearl Harbor.

I read an interesting book, "The Deserters," that looked at just a few case studies of deserters in the ETO. Not only was morale dangerously low much of the time, especially in Italy, but the amount of profiteering by civilians and logistics was insane

Even many American veterans seemed to have a more even handed view of things. Just look at movies from the 50's retelling the events of Pearl Harbor. They were quite honest about Japan's situation and The Rape of Berlin pissed a lot of veterans off.
