To this day no has ever answered the simple question: “what is the purpose of the chin”? The most commonly given answer, that it helps to chew, is stupid: masticatory stress was a greater problem 500,000 years ago and yet chins then were poorly developed.

The chin, weirdly, is a sign of human mental progress. If you wanted what it did you might want to look at which groups today have large jaws, like say Germanics.

chin is signal growth like jaw. you have resources to spare other places.

This argument falls flat, because those resources could be spent anywhere, so why at the chin?

More pronounced in men, perhaps secondary sexual characteristic. But really I wager is co-evolved with drunk brawls, famously common in the germanic countries of old in cities and villages alike. Beats having a broken jaw.

Chin development is a good indicator of immune system health during male childhood. It’s plumage to impress females.
