Think for a second about the absurdity of the 1860 election: in a runoff Lincoln would have lost to Douglas 60-40 but instead he wins and Southerners understandably view him as illegitimate and secede.

Not sure this holds. Lincoln only would have lost California and Oregon to a fusion ticket w/ IRL results, tho that's a flawed comparison. Still had a dominant EV total. Turning it into a purely sectional contest could have doomed Douglas in the northern states he did win.
