Think for a second about the absurdity of the 1860 election: in a runoff Lincoln would have lost to Douglas 60-40 but instead he wins and Southerners understandably view him as illegitimate and secede.

This is of course the fault of the Southerners themselves, who in a fit of childish insanity rejected Douglas as nominee because he believed Western states should be allowed to ban slavery if they wished

Not sure this holds. Lincoln only would have lost California and Oregon to a fusion ticket w/ IRL results, tho that's a flawed comparison. Still had a dominant EV total. Turning it into a purely sectional contest could have doomed Douglas in the northern states he did win.
