This is so true, and it's not about small talk. People prefer to sit on their phones than get to know a stranger, they seem afraid of meeting new people. And even if they want to, they don't seem to know how.

Same cause for high loneliness rates recently. I think people who crave complexity/language/banter/etc. find it far far more easily in fiction than they do IRL, and this means almost no one gets practice at becoming fun to talk to.
