The huge disparity in manpower and material on the WWII Eastern Front is something I've never been able to my mind around: it seems the Germans shouldn't have stood a chance from the start. At Kursk the Soviets had a 3:1 advantage in men/tanks, 5:1 in artillery:pic.twitter.com/qyISJswlYC

In Call of Duty United Offensive you get to re-enact the battle of Prokhorovka and destroy about 40 German tanks. In the real battle, the entire Soviet strategic reserve panicked and drove itself into a ditch (their own ditch) after spotting Tigers (that were actually Panzers).pic.twitter.com/0pllsCVEbU

Young, inexperienced, poorly trained, poorly motivated, poorly led conscripts. They recentlyhad a revolution to get out of an european meat grinder war, and here they are again. It was them vs the guys that had just handily beaten everybody. 😬

You can thank (blame) FDR for the material advantage. FDR didn't provide the tanks, but he did the planes and trucks (troop transport/logistics).

And the food and fuel the troops used, and the trains that delivered it all.

Some of these numbers are a bit exaggerated. The Soviets never fully deployed their numerically superior tanks and artillery in any given battle. But even then the disparties were crazy
