The first Sharpe novel takes place in the Peninsular Campaign. There comes a time in the book when Spanish soldiers fire a huge volley at a tiny French patrol, became frightened by the the sound of their own muskets and run into a nearby town, which they plunder.

There are some cases of military incompetence that are so ridiculous that people have a hard time believing them. The Mexicans really did lose the Battle of San Jacinto because they took a giant siesta and forgot to post sentries.
Cornwell does good historical research usually. But this is a fairly unbelievable episode!
To think this was the nation that produced the awesome line of "You will have to tell His Majesty that his offer has been rejected, for he faces a Spanish regiment!" or something to that effect. Also: Oooooooooooooooooooooof.
