The first Sharpe novel takes place in the Peninsular Campaign. There comes a time in the book when Spanish soldiers fire a huge volley at a tiny French patrol, became frightened by the the sound of their own muskets and run into a nearby town, which they plunder.

There are some cases of military incompetence that are so ridiculous that people have a hard time believing them. The Mexicans really did lose the Battle of San Jacinto because they took a giant siesta and forgot to post sentries.
