I have a distant (older) cousin who was committed to a huge orphanage in Owatanna, MN and wrote a book about the experience. There was a kid there, a popular athlete who unbeknownst to him, had born to a black father and white mother in Minneapolis. He was light that he passed.

The only people who knew the secret were the principal and older nuns at the school. They stayed quiet until he asked out the principal's daughter to a date and she said yes. The head nun then told him the truth: he called her a lying bitch and threw his chair across the room.

Many years later, in the 1950's, he wrote the nun a letter apologizing for his behavior in which he accepted that he was black. He wrote that was engaged to a white girl, but he had told her everything and they had agreed not to have children. That's the old America.
