The real question is how to reconcile the non-violence now with imperial Japanese behavior in WW2
The same way Gandhi had to reconcile the behavior of the ultra polite Englishmen he met in London with those on the other side of the Suez Canal. Violence against foreigners in time of war is regarded differently everywhere.

Some of the only people that compete with the Japanese in omega-3 status are the Eskimo; they too are famous for having ultra-low homicide rates. In recent decades anthropologists have tried to dispute this, but their examples are all of violence toward foreigners.

I feel like there are noticeable ethnic differences between the polite upper class Englishmen of London and the lower class conscripts they sent to fight in the colonies but maybe I’m wrong
