In 1971 after William Calley was convicted of murder for My Lai the outraged people of his home state of Georgia banded together to pressure Governor Jimmy Carter into declaring a "William Calley Day", which sounds like a 4chan style prank but was actually a serious effort.
Carter hedged, declaring an "American Fighting Men's Day" instead while declaring that Calley had unfairly been scapegoated (while not exactly saying he was innocent either). The past is a different country.
This doesn't sound very different from how it goes on now, actually: something happens somewhere (usually something very bad) and people in different political tribes come up with COMPLETELY different versions of what actually happened.
