Now and again someone proposes the idea that strict medieval criminal justice selected against violent behavior in Europeans. But old courts were actually remarkably soft on crime; only 7% of murderers hanged, so "to kill someone appears to have been a safe thing to do" in 1200:pic.twitter.com/xR61DdN2jv

yeah, justice didn't get really harsh until the 1500-1600s. during the tudor period in england, people who stole loaves of bread were sometimes executed. the selection pressures against violent behavior were very strong in the early part of the early modern period, not medieval.

The short period in question is not going to allow much selection to occur. Just as relevantly, while the proportion of people executed went up markedly the number of total offenders also declined as people responded rationally to incentives.

time doesn't matter so much. depends on how strong the selection pressures are. got tuskless elephants in southern africa in a couple of generations.

It matters a lot, especially when other things are also being selected for e.g. there have been noticeable changes in gene frequency related to lighter coloring and lower schizophrenia risk in England/Scandinavia in the 1,000 years.

yes, i know. just saying that selection can happen quickly if the pressures are strong. (note that i’m not saying that i know that that’s what happened in this case.)
