There's a concept that I need to name, of noticing a person who is so extraordinary, so much better than second place that you instinctively ask: "where is THAT guy from!?", which is the reaction an American would have seeing Tom Jones in 1965:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMbfYOaStU4 …

Jones, like Burton, has gone on the record as saying that Welshman have a distinctive voice, big and booming which he so exemplifieshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTLTjVhhxB4&t=3m58s …

The fact that Welsh voices are so often described as "big" led me to wonder if their lungs are genuinely strong, at least by British standards. The places that consistently produce great distance runners are quasi-Welsh highlanders who raise animals in hills like the Kalenjin.

So is there evidence that the Welsh are better at running distance than other British? I think so....in 2018 Mo Farrah broke the all time British marathon record which had set by the Welshman Steve Jones in 1984 (which was a world record at the time.)

In 2000 and 2004 the Welshman Jon Brown placed 4th in the Olympic marathon. In 1992 the best British time was had by the Welshman Steve Brace. There are a grand total of three million people in Wales, so I think I can securely say this is no coincidence.

Now on the other hand as great as the Welsh are at running distance, they don't compare in that respect with Norwegians who have by a huge margin the strongest lungs in Europe, an Arctic adaptation. So it isn't purely strength, but rather strength interacting with something else.

As someone of Irish extraction, the power and tone of the Welsh voice is proverbial, especially the choirs, and this from the Irish who are no slouches as singers, Ireland is known for tenors.

I agree about Irish voices. I had thought that maybe some of what makes the Welsh voice distinctive is a common Celtic quality, just with some extra power.
