Since 2000 census results have been used to paint America as a more German place than it actually is. The town of Berlin, Ontario became Kitchener in 1916. Anglicisation of names seems most probable. Also, as a kid I heard this rumor as fact:https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-german-vote/ …

Germans didn’t Anglicize their names except in obvious circumstances such as Schmidt-Smith or Muller/Miller
