There are mental declines that accompany depression that sometimes outlast the condition, such as declines in episodic memory and psychomotor slowing. Depression is not a binary category; some people, physiologically, are always on the verge.

If you know anything about antidepressants you know that they reduce inflammation and that this may even be their primary mechanism of action. The disease ridden environment of tropical Africa produced people that under severe immune stress would not get the blues.

Has depression really been selected against at all, though? I’ve read that clinically depressed people have as many kids on average as non-depressed people, across cultures—and that worldwide rates of clinical depression are quite similar.
