My hunch is an infectious agent, akin to Greg Cochrane’s “gay germ” theory of homosexuality. Why 1980? Maybe that was the year that the unknown pathogen exploded into the world, just as Covid did in 2020.
The most consequential yet unspoken fact of American life in 2020 is that the autism epidemic didn't just affect diagnosed autistics, it fucked up everyone born after about 1980, which is exactly you would expect if the disorder is a spectrum.

Autism was added to the IDEA list of recognized educational disorders in 1990, the only name-specific disorder to be so (the others are generic). Schools latched on for $$$. Except for my sons (born late 1990s), pure genetics in our case (3+ generations). And me, LOL.
