A lot of ethnic hate mobs begin with a real yet flimsy pretext: Kristallnacht was incited when a Jewish teenager murdered Ernst vom Rath for no real reason; the Rwandan genocide when the Hutu president's plane was shot down by Tutsis.
In both cases there was a ton of pre-existing grievances held by the offending group, but the pretext fulfilled the useful purpose of allowing the aggressors to act as wounded victims as they pummeled their adversaries
