It's going to be difficult to explain to future generations why the insane Iraq War seemed like an obvious idea at the time. I think one factor was that the public had been already primed to see WMDs as a huge threat by a spate of movies/other media which featured them as threats

I think 24 was more important than all of these in that respect. Regardless before the build up to the war began, after 9/11 half the country was already ready to go kill Muslims anywhere at the drop of a hat.
