When Iceland was first discovered agriculture was practiced on a large scale, but after the onset of the Little Ice Age most grain had to be imported and the people subsisted mostly on animal protein, especially fish.

Yugoslavians are so tall because they have a lot of genes from Europe's original hunter gatherer population, as do the Dutch and other peoples of the Baltic (seeing a pattern?).
-
i recall reading Cpt Cook in his travels ( can’t remember which voyage ) thru polynesia noted the Maori were exceptionally strong , author PMoon 1 of his books , pastor/Minister saw Maori running up hills/mountains huge cut logs/tree trunks on shoulders .

One can check on whether Western Georgians, Abkhazs, Basques, Galicians, Gilakis show similar height anomalies to Dinaric alp dwellers. Not convinced it's about rainfall and herding

These ad hoc explanations are always very dumb. Polynesians are not tall, they are massive, wide. Montenegrins are the opposite, they are tall, with legs that are relatively long compared to other southern Europeans.

Very interesting thread. Also worth noting that high mass is its own solution to cold, even without shivering. Points about limb length are very compelling as a cold adaptation. Worth noting that Icelandic and Maori both known for warrior cultures.

That's another interpretive angle. True of all Polynesians as well. Battle-axes of various sorts used in both early Scandiavia (Thor's hammer) and Pacific Islands (big wooden clubs). That brings both types of sexual selection into the analysis as well as the physical adaptations.
