I dunno... An Austrian Habsburg prince became Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico in 1864, when the accordion was a hot new instrument. After his defeat, did his Central European supporters tend to settle in the northern desert regions of Mexico, hence "Norteno" music?https://twitter.com/Theo_Chilton/status/1162863251387891712 …

Why does Mexican music have so much accordion in it?

Steve (and I think @gcochran99?) was a GE College Bowl contestant, which correlates with good general knowledge. Aside from the baseline canon of academic knowledge, interesting anecdotes can help push the needle further in your direction in a quiz bowl setting.

I was on a college bowl team with my younger brother, at the University of Illinois. Naturally we won.

Played against a team of transfers from SIU: the Carbondale Bongs. We led 300-0 at the half.

Occasionally no-name schools do well but usually it's a perpetual student with decades of quiz bowl experience doing all the work

My brother's high-school team came in 2nd in the state - from a schooL with a graduating class of ~100. Later his college team won the midwestern regional... We have funny memories. Or more exactly, you-all have shitty memories.

Yeah, well my high school team also came in second at state and our school was so rural that it was in the middle of a Minnesota cornfield, so I think I have your brother beat.
