Yes i should have mentioned novel diseases—often the two causes are believed to be roughly equal. Did you know "we" in the US passed out "smallpox blankets" to Indians in order to spread the infection, hence the two causes sometimes intertwined
The Chipewyan of upper Alberta lost nearly 90 percent of their population in the Great Plains outbreak of 1775-82 despite having almost no contact with whites at all. The disease was transmitted in a chain from Mexico by way of the Shoshone and Comanche.
