So my grandmothers and their sisters who underwent this rite of passage giving birth to our mothers and subsequently me did not face these risks? Sounds like the case of “close your eyes to prayer” and our land was taken by bible wielding colonials. Choice an option?
-
I'm sorry but I don't really understand what you're trying to say? I don't know your grandmother or your mother and what they've been through personally. If they have been circumcised then I'm sorry for them as they had no choice in that decision.
-
And how would you know they had no choice? They were and are happy for the cultural significance of the rite. Let us be!
-
You really cannot claim that no women experience pain or complications later in life through this procedure just because your grandmother didn't or says she didn't. Some women and young girls are forced to get it done and that's not okay, that's what the original tweet was about.
-
Men feel pain as well as women. The pain was intended to be test of character. Have you ever interrogated the reasoning behind the rite rather than the action? Is genital piercing for jewelry one of those that offend you as it is common in the west? Again choice??
-
You refuse to actually consider the feelings of those women who wish they hadn't had it done to them and coming with senseless counter. points. This conversation is about female genital mutilation not piercings. I refuse to spend more time on you. I hope you learn empathy.
-
No i don’t refuse. But I want a woman that is allowed the choice. Mmmmm.....piercing and mutilation! Point made and just lost!!!!
-
No one is saying you shouldn't have the choice. Piercings don't impair the woman's ability to enjoy sex etc and its a CHOICE. It's illegal to do it on children. They're not comparable. The point is no one should force the procedure of fgm on women or children.

And I could send you a list of women I know who are doing just fine on the procreation side of things without a problem even with the cut. My point? You can dwell on negatives but still refuse to address the cultural reasons behind the rite.

ANY cultural or religious cutting in ANY child is an abomination and should be outlawed as an assault with a deadly weapon
