a huge role. but let’s do two things: help those who are out of work AND protect businesses so all can purchase critical need items (food, pharmacy, hygiene)
I live in a poor third world country and people are not doing this.
I'm sure it is affecting it, but as a data point: I've seen the Walgreens on Van Ness and Market like this last year, with the same explanation (so, it was bad before the pandemic).
this has nothing to do with unemployment. it has everything to do with drug addiction and the acceptance of crime.
And why do you think people start taking drugs? To escape reality. Why do they want to escape reality? Likely due to poverty. Why are they poor? Likely due to lack of employment that pays a living wage for the area.
when I last visited SF over a year ago, I noticed the toothbrushes in Walgreens were behind a locked glass case. the toothbrushes.
because they’re small and easy to lift
This predates covid by a couple of years.
What's playing a role in the increase is the failure to count it as a crime anymore.
